A love affair between tourists and penguins in Patagonia
By The Irreverent Homemaker on February 1, 2010
GlobalPost’s Julia Kumari Drapkin traveled to the remote region of Patagonia, on the southern tip of Argentina, to visit with biologists studying the penguin population.
Scientists are examining the impact of the 150,000 tourists who visit the penguins yearly. So far, the effects appear to be largely benign.
Still, the birds face threats from warming ocean currents that disrupt the food chain — so preserving the population is important to the local economy.
