Why the change of heart?  Walker now has a book out, of course, and he was on the radio pandering to partisan-bashing detractors to sell more copies of his novel.  While Walker is perfectly within his entrepreneurial rights to do so, Herald de Paris publisher Jes Alexander took a contrary position, and offered this “Soapbox” rant on Le Morning Show, this morning:

(Jes) Among the things [Walker] said was that George W. Bush was the highest spending president in history.  I have an issue with such a blatantly misleading statement said, it would seem, to sell books.  Walker failed to mention that his assertion did not consider inflationary factors.

So too – and yes, there were plenty of problems with W’s presidency – W-bashers all love to ignore one basic fact, and that is this:  Unlike any President since the War of 1812, W was faced with the overwhelming task of defending US soil against foreign attack.

A lot of the money spent on “homeland security” (still a stupid name) was not Bush’s idea, nor was it something he, or anyone, particularly wanted to do.  After 9/11 there were no more attacks on US soil and for that, I think we should all be grateful.

I don’t think there is a person on the planet who wanted to be the US president during that moment in our history.  And if you think of it, Walker pandering to Bush-haters to hock his book is EXACTLY what is wrong with this country.

If Walker was so opposed to Bush’s administration, why didn’t he resign?  I have a problem with those who bite the hand that fed them.

(Le Morning Show News Director Fi Brownrigg) Right. The problem is, of course, that W. was waging two wars without changing anything to pay for them.

(Jes) I think Walker, like so many others, is just out for himself.   And let me reiterate that YES, there were plenty of problems with that administration.  Still, how anyone could overlook the daunting task of having to defend a huge nation like it had never been defended against enemy attack before is nothing less than short-sighted.

In fairness, I think I am so sensitive to that whole thing because it was my hometown and my adopted home under attack.  I lost childhood friends in the towers – for me, it wasn’t just very real, it was surreal.  I am going to step down off my soapbox for today unless there are audience questions/comments. I just thought it needed to be said.

I just don’t think many people in the US are aware that THEIR LIVES were in danger.
